SEO vs GEO — the Battle That Isn't

SEO and GEO look like two disciplines at war: one optimises for search engines, the other for generative systems. This article explains the real tension between them, compares their metrics and audiences, and shows why the answer isn't picking a side, but working both at once.

Two Disciplines, One War?

SEO and GEO are often described as if they were opposing camps: one born in the 1990s for search engines that return lists of links, the other born in 2024 for generative systems that synthesise answers. It’s tempting to frame it as a battle between the old guard and the new one, between the classic search engine and the LLM said to be replacing it.

That framing is useful for understanding the real differences — which is why it’s worth unpacking below, in detail — but it ends up proving the opposite of what it promises: SEO and GEO don’t compete for the same space; they work on different layers of the same website. The tension is apparent; the real relationship is complementary, not a replacement.

What Each One Optimises

To see the real difference, look at what each discipline measures and which final audience it serves.

  • SEO (Search Engine Optimization) optimises so a traditional search engine (Google, Bing) indexes a page and ranks it highly in a list of results. The end audience is a human user who clicks a link from that list and visits the original site. The classic metric is ranking position and the traffic it drives.
  • GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) optimises so a generative system built on LLMs (ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and search engines that now integrate generated answers) understands, fragments and cites a piece of content correctly as a source for a synthesised answer. The end audience often doesn’t visit the original site at all: they read an answer that may or may not include an explicit link or citation. The metric is whether the system correctly attributes the source, not its position in a list.

Where They Really Differ

Three concrete differences mark the real boundaries between the two disciplines:

  • Output format. SEO produces an ordered list of links; GEO produces — or feeds into — a synthesised text that can blend fragments from several sites.
  • Unit of optimisation. SEO works on the whole page (title, metadata, overall structure); GEO works on the individual fragment — the paragraph, the definition, the specific data point — because that’s the unit a generative system extracts and cites, not the whole page.
  • Signals they value. SEO relies heavily on accumulated authority (backlinks, domain reputation, E-E-A-T signals); GEO relies more on the text’s own immediate citability — clarity, atomicity, verifiable data — regardless of how much accumulated authority the publishing domain has.

Where They Overlap

Despite those differences, both disciplines start from the same technical base: a crawlable, fast, well-structured site. The AI crawlers that feed GEO largely rely on the same crawling infrastructure as traditional SEO — robots.txt, sitemap, load speed. A site with basic technical problems (blocked indexing, slow load times, confusing structure) won’t work for either SEO or GEO, regardless of which one is prioritised.

The Resolution: Complementary, Not a Replacement

The practical conclusion is clear: a well-built site today needs SEO and GEO at the same time, not a choice between them. They aren’t alternatives — GEO isn’t the same as SEO, but they’re sibling disciplines, not rivals — because they cover different, complementary needs of the same problem: giving visibility to content, whichever system discovers it.

A concrete example: an article with clean URLs, clear titles and correct metadata (SEO) starts with an advantage for also being fragmented, understood and cited by an LLM (GEO), because most of the technical infrastructure is shared. Conversely, an article written with short, self-contained definitions, designed to be citable on its own (GEO), usually also gains clarity for a human user who finds it in a traditional search engine (SEO). Prioritising only one discipline, while ignoring the other, leaves a site invisible to a growing share of how people discover information today.
